🧾JOB SAFETY ANALYSIS STEP BY STEP
✅ Steps of Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
Job Safety Analysis (JSA), also known as Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), is a structured process to identify hazards associated with a specific job task and implement controls to eliminate or reduce the risk.
🔹 Step 1: Select the Job to be Analyzed
-
Focus on jobs with:
-
High injury or incident rates
-
Potential for serious harm
-
New or modified procedures
-
Non-routine or infrequent tasks
-
-
Example: Maintenance of a rotating machine, working at height.
🔹 Step 2: Break the Job into Steps
-
Divide the job into logical, sequential steps (usually 5–10).
-
Avoid too much detail or combining too many actions.
-
Example:
Task: Operating a ladder
Steps:-
Inspect the ladder
-
Set up the ladder
-
Climb and perform the task
-
Descend and store the ladder
-
🔹 Step 3: Identify Hazards for Each Step
-
Ask: What can go wrong?
-
Consider:
-
Mechanical, chemical, electrical, ergonomic, environmental hazards
-
Human error, unsafe conditions
-
-
Use observation, past incident data, and team input
-
Example:
Step: Set up the ladder
Hazard: Ladder may slip on smooth surface
🔹 Step 4: Determine Control Measures
-
Decide how to eliminate or reduce the hazard:
-
Elimination (remove the hazard)
-
Substitution (use safer material or method)
-
Engineering controls (e.g., guards, ventilation)
-
Administrative controls (e.g., SOPs, job rotation)
-
PPE (e.g., gloves, harness)
-
-
Example:
Control: Use ladder with non-slip feet and secure it before use
🔹 Step 5: Document and Communicate the JSA
-
Record all steps, hazards, and controls in a JSA form.
-
Review it with all workers involved in the task.
-
Get signatures if required for accountability.
🔹 Step 6: Review and Update the JSA
-
Reassess when:
-
There is a change in process, equipment, or personnel
-
An incident or near miss occurs
-
During routine audits or inspections
-
🧾 JSA Format Example:
| Job Step | Hazard | Control Measure |
|---|---|---|
| Set up ladder | Ladder may slip | Use anti-slip feet, secure base |
| Climb ladder | Fall from height | Use harness, maintain 3-point contact |
